On 23 March 2020 the Antimonopoly Office of the Slovak Republic joined other competition authorities cooperating within the European Competition Network (ECN) in declaring a joint statement on how to apply European competition rules during the crisis resulting from the spread of coronavirus.

In the statement, all the competition authorities unitedly recognise the social and economic consequences of the crisis.
At the same time, they jointly underline that the competition rules are flexible enough to take into account such changes in market circumstances.

It is necessary that medical accessories and protective material that are currently needed remain available at competitive prices.

The competition authorities will also monitor possible “the abuse of situation” and intervene in cases of cartelization of market or the abuse of dominant position.

In this context, they also emphasize that current competition rules allow manufacturers to set maximum prices for their products to limit unjustified price increase within the distribution chain.

They encourage companies that need further guidance in individual cases to contact either the national competition authorities or the European Commission or the EFTA Surveillance Authority.
