Workshop on abuse of a dominant position in the form of margin squeeze

The Antimonopoly Office of the Slovak Republic in cooperation with Trnava University in Trnava organized the workshop on abuse of a dominant position in the form of margin squeeze. Workshop took place on March 29, 2012 in European Information Centre in Bratislava and was attended by representatives of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission, Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic, Supreme Administrative Court of the Czech Republic, Regional Court in Bratislava,  Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia, Office for the Protection of Competition of the Czech Republic, members of the Council of the Antimonopoly Office of the Slovak Republic and representatives of Transparency International Slovensko.

The event was opened by Tibor Menyhart, Chairman of the Antimonopoly Office of the Slovak Republic and by Peter Varga, representative of Faculty of Law of Trnava University in Trnava. Both domestic and foreign experts dealt with margin squeeze from the various points of view as the practice based on combination of high wholesale and low retail prices applied by dominant companies against competitors with the aim to squeeze them out of the market. Ivan Rumana from the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic outlined in his presentation the experiences connected with examination of decisions of the Antimonopoly Office of SR in the area of abuse of dominant position. Ján Mazák, Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union talked about the price squeeze in the present judicature of the Court of Justice of the European Union. Helena Meyer from Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission explained practical aspects of proving the margin squeeze. Participants appreciated the benefit of this workshop and agreed on the fact that the cooperation of courts and competition authorities in revealing and proving the margin squeeze is exceptionally important.
